Have you ever looked out at the waves and seen surfers, looking effortlessly cool and just wished you could be one of them? Well I did, and as I was a rather uncool kid, it was very appealing!

Over the past few years I decided to put in the work to become one of those surfers. Along the way, I found that surfing teaches you a lot of life lessons. So, if like me, you want to become one of those people having fun in the waves here are the life lessons it will teach you.

1 Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the buzzword of the meditation and self-improvement world. I love it! You may have even been like me and done courses of mindful meditation or even retreats. But I can guarantee you, surfing offers a level of mindfulness that is beyond anything lying on a mat and thinking will give you.

For those of you that don’t know about mindfulness. In a nutshell, it is taking time to focus on the sensations of your body. From breathing, to feel, to taste. It is being aware of yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, you can surf and be completely unmindful. But you normally hear these people cussing as they miss a wave or fall off the board. They generally don’t…
