We are nearing the end of 2022, and looking back, it has been a crazy year full of utterly astonishing and paradigm-shifting breakthroughs and revelations. While history will remember recent years for COVID-19, I think it will also remember 2022 as the turning point for humanity due to the emergence of new revolutionary technology (as well as the beginning of the end of Putin). So, here is my pick of the most significant moments of 2022.

#1 NIF’s Fusion Energy Gain

Fusion power has the potential to be the most climate-friendly energy source ever, but for decades, it has eluded us. Our fusion reactors would require more energy to run than they would produce, often leading to a net energy loss of around 70%.

This all changed on December 5th when the National Ignition Facility (NIF) hit a net energy gain of 54%! I would say this staggering result was unprecedented, but I actually predicted the result weeks beforehand (read more here). NIF reaching this milestone now means that fusion power is possible and that we could finally get our hands on the plant-saving energy source.
