This Simple Yet Genius Tech Could Unlock A 100% Renewable Energy Grid
Underground gravity energy systems are a game-changer.
For decades, we have dreamt of powering our lives using exclusively cheap and planet-saving renewable energy. But despite renewable technology having existed for over a century, we have struggled to fully make use of it. You see, there is something holding wind and solar power back, and that is battery technology. But luckily, a group of brilliant scientists and engineers have figured out how to solve this conundrum using mine shafts and massive weights, and we are now able to discover the incredible world of Underground Gravity Energy Storage (UGES).
Before we dive into UGES, let’s quickly recap why renewables need batteries. Because the wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shine, wind and solar energy output can vary quite dramatically over time. Moreover, for both technologies, peak energy demand rarely coincides with peak energy output. To solve this, massive batteries known as “grid-level batteries” are used to store energy during these peak times and then release it to meet the energy demand during off-peak times.
Now, our energy grids are far from 100% renewable, as they still use a good deal of nuclear, coal, and gas energy. This reduces renewable energy’s…
